Newent 27, BARFC 7 (17/09/16)

| 17/09/2016

Bridgwater and Albion travelled up the M5 to play second placed Newent who made the best use of their sloping ground to notch up their third victory of the season writes Richard Walsh.
The Somerset side were in the ascendancy from the start after Newent kicked straight into touch. A number of smart passes with good work from James Collings resulted in Bridgwater being awarded two penalties.
From the second of these the forwards drove over and it was Joe Bussell who touched down for a try which Stuart Heal converted to make it 0-7 to the visitors.
Newent came back strongly up the hill and after 18 minutes they kicked ahead and from that move the ball was eventually touched down for a try which was converted to level the scores.
Bridgwater lost scrum half Tom Fournier D’Albe on 20 minutes which resulted in Roger Drabble moving to take his place and Jay Owens coming on as a replacement.
Just before half hour Heal kicked a long ball down the slope which found Ollie Dunn but the Newent defence held and he was unable to get to the line.
The visitors kept pressing and Heal made a long clearance deep into Newent territory but once again the hosts countered well and Bridgwater’s efforts went unrewarded.
Late into the half Owen went off injured to be replaced by James McLaughlan and just before half time Newent took the lead with a penalty to make it 10-7 at the break.
In the second half Newent took full advantage of the slope and on two minutes the hosts ran the ball well which resulted in an unconverted try.
Newent kept on attacking but the visitors defence held firm. However on 10 minutes a series of close handling moves by the hosts saw them score another unconverted try.
Both sides then produced a good passage of rugby with both sides creating chances but not scoring. On 70 minutes Drabble and Collins linked up well together to create a chance for Bridgwater but once again the home defence held firm and the visitors were thwarted.
The final score of the day went to Newent when full back Gardner touched down over the line for a try that was then well converted to make the final score 27-7.
