B&A RFC 3rd XV 0, Cheddar Valley 40 (15/12/12)

| 11/04/2013

The 3rd XV were beaten by league front-runners Cheddar Valley this afternoon 0-40.

Albion may have been anticipating a difficult match against the second placed side Cheddar Valley on Saturday, having lost heavily in the shadow of the Gorge in the first game of the season.

It was Albion however who made the brighter start and capitalised on a dropped ball by the visitors to hack into the 22.  However after three minutes Cheddar set out their stall with some excellent work out of defence and should really have scored but Albion’s desperate defence just recovered.

Albion were finding problems with Cheddar’s backs and indeed the forwards as in the 6th minute Albion’s pack were shoved off its own ball at a scrum and Clevedon’s stand-off dashed over for the opening try which was converted.  Albion stormed back but too many missed tackles allowed the visitors too much scope.

Albion then dropped the ball and it was Cheddar’s turn to hack on, but they missed a certain try again.  In the 16th minute a poor kick out of defence by Albion allowed Cheddar’s right wing to run 40 unhindered metres and when the ball was recycled they had men over to score again.  Six minutes later good offloading out of the tackle created space and the Cheddar stand-off ran in for his second try which was again converted.  For Albion Frost was working overtime in making important tackles and taking Albion up the field.  Half-time arrived with the visitors having secured three goals.
In the very first minute of the second half Cheddar once again wasted an overlap with a forward pass.  In the 52nd minute the visitors at last put together a concerted passing move and their stand-off completed his hat-trick with a try at the posts.  Eight minutes later Cheddar once again used the extra man to score at the posts.

The scoring ended in the 65th minute when Cheddar’s forwards and backs combined neatly to secure the final try.  Three minutes later with the gloom descending, the referee sensibly called it a day.  Albion were pleased and Cheddar ran on rampantly.

The Dirtrackers amplified their patchy season – despite an encouraging and good win against Wyvern the previous week, there were several changes from the side which may have disrupted.  Albion were hampered by injuries to Page and Burrows who both left the field but Rogers returned for his first appearance of the season and several Morganians players made up the side.  In particular, S.Pearce who moved to scrum-half did a commendable job in difficult circumstances behind a retreating pack.

The Dirtrackers finish 2012 just above the relegation spots in Somerset 2 South and will be looking for those extra wins in the New Year to secure survival.  They can do it if only they were more consistent.
