Albion’s Dirtrackers were left kicking their heels again for the third time this season after Taunton III withdrew from the league. Hot on their heels was the withdrawal of Wellington III who have also struggled to fulfil matches this season. Ivel Barbarians II pulled out earlier. This now leaves Somerset 2 South with ten sides and hence the remaining fixtures this season are now somewhat fragmented. Albion have three scheduled games now – at Minehead Barbarians who have shown some considerable spirit in maintaining their fixtures notwithstanding that they are out on a limb down in West Somerset and often travel short but hope to get made up by the opposition so that a game is played; at home to Burnham-on-Sea (who have also called off games recently); then at Wyvern who are still in the frame for the league championship. Ironically Albion were the spare side (in a 13 team league) on the last day of the league season on 18 April but now they find themselves with three other opponents without matches. That may well play into the hands of Albion who are keen to stage a match on that day and at home as that will coincide with the actual 50th anniversary weekend of club President and Dirtrackers’ stalwart Mike Berry’s debut for the club in 1965. Hopefully one of these spare opponents will provide Albion with a match.
Further down in Somerset 3 South there are also rank withdrawals and no doubt Somerset CRFU will be looking carefully at the league structure for next season and in any event, it is likely to alter again in 2016/17 when wholesale reconstruction above takes place.
The Dirtrackers are idle again this week as 14 March is a spare league weekend and only Albion’s 2nd XV is in action away to Chard II in a rearranged match from the waterlogged postponed game a few weeks ago. They will find the home side in good form as they surprisingly pipped the league leaders Hornets II last weekend.
All Albion sides have fulfilled their fixtures this season – when you look around it appears that is a commendable achievement.
