ERIC ROY WARE 1950-2016

Club members – particularly those who were supporting the club or playing in the late 1960’s to mid-1970’s – will be sad to have learned of the death of Eric Ware recently at the age of 66.

Eric, who lived in the Westonzoyland/Middlezoy area before latterly moving to Street, was the archetypical rustic version of what a prop forward should look like – solid, square, squat, strong and uncompromising. Eric lived for his scrummaging ability and Albion did well from his efforts. He earned high praise from good quality opponents for his robustness and was always challenging to any opposition. Eric rarely handled the ball but on the odd occasion often bundled over for a try from close range.

Whilst he was mainly a performer in our United XV, he stepped up admirably on 1st XV duty on many occasions and certainly never let the side down. He had a particularly unique style – originally being a teetotaller and enduring long distance journeys to the south west and to London without alcoholic refreshment – a rare beast. However it appears that later his temperance attitude mollified. On one occasion with transport facilities sparse, Eric drove his tractor from Middlezoy into Bridgwater, got on the coach to play away and duly drove the tractor back in the small hours of the next morning upon return from a match in some far flung place.

He was a true character and much loved and admired by all of his colleagues. Bridgwater & Albion sends his sincere condolences to Eric and his family and all will remember him affectionately.
