Castle Cary 10, Bridgwater & Albion 2nd XV 17 (22/09/12)

| 11/04/2013

On a bright sunny day, in ideal conditions for high quality rugby, Bridgwater attacked downhill in the first half. Cary knocked the ball on when receiving the kick off which allowed Bridgwater to immediately force themselves upon the opposition. Early pressure from the Albion pack with good support from the backline, allowed Roger Drabble to dart over on eight minutes from a quick tap penalty to open the scoring under the posts, which Pippard duly converted.

The next ten minutes were all Bridgwater with good ball retention all round the park. the Cary defence was stretched from one side of the park to the other, and Mitch Windsor exploited a well worked overlap to finish off a great team try.

With Bridgwater now comfortably 12-0 up, they allowed Cary back into the game, and they used their big forward runners well. The Bridgwater defence was well organised though and pressure forced Cary to squander several good attacking opportunities by knocking the ball on. Eventually the relentless attacking bore fruit with the Cary number 8 outfoxing the Bridgwater defence with an audacious dummy to get Cary off the mark, shortly before half time. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the half time scores at 12-5 to the Albion.

The second half saw Bridgwater reinvigorated, with Windsor commanding twenty five minutes for rugby. The backs were linking up well and the forwards were securing good ball. Following several minutes of good play Drabble was able to link up with Hambleton, who outpaced the Cary defence up the hill to score in the corner, taking the score to 17-5.

Cary then enjoyed a prolonged period of attack scoring one further unconverted try, but Bridgwater were able to hold on until the final whistle with the score at 17-10. This was a fantastic team effort with everyone performing well, however special mention is deserved of the dancing feet of Drabble, and the strong defence to Windsor proving key to the win.
