Jan15-IMG_0608Bridgy were unrecognisable as the same team that lost heavily the previous week. Their closing down of Weston runners and first up tackling was a vast improvement. So much so that, three minutes in the Bridgwater centres were caught well offside in their enthusiasm. Weston slotted the resultant penalty. For the remainder of the first half it was mainly the home side that applied the “go forward” approach and had an attempt held and, it must be said that Weston’s defence was a tough nut to crack.

On 28 minutes though after a series of red zone penalties for Weston offside which could have resulted in a yellow, The home side found a way through to score the first try of the match through No.8 Jamie Clegg, followed by an excellent conversion out wide from Fly Half Niall Homer. Half time score 7 – 3.

Second period started with Bridgy giving away another offside penalty ten minutes in and again slotted. Weston took in the restart but were turned over on halfway. Bridgwater backs got to the 22, then excellent driving and recycling from the ever improving pack ended with prop Jack Jones spinning out of a tackle to crash down cleanly over the line – only for the try to be adjudged held up because the actual grounding had not been seen. Mind you, the closest Weston defenders were already on their way behind their posts!

The game turned on that decision and Weston sensed it. They pressed forward and with 15 minutes to go after sustained pressure scored an easily converted try under the posts.

The home side let themselves down a bit then by mouthing off and were penalised a couple of times for doing so. However they never let their heads drop and through the backs made a few damaging runs the third of which unfortunately they lost possession and the ball was cleared by Weston back to a lineout in the home 22 Bridgwater knocked on and from the resultant scrummage the ball squirted out of the side, Weston picked up, crossed the line and instead of a scrum reset the try was awarded. To rub it in the two extra points were well taken.

On this showing Bridgy Colts were at least worth a losing bonus point and should have had the win…..!

Next up at home on Saturday 24 January Clevedon pay us a visit.
