Midsomer Norton 31-24 Bridgwater & Albion RFC
Bridgwater & Albion RFC put in another good performance at Midsomer Norton. Despite scoring four tries, they ended up on the losing side in a game they could have won.
The visitors started strongly. In the seventh minute Shaun Mahoney and Rowan Traynor combined to make good ground deep into Norton territory. This was before the ball was passed to Danny Mahoney who, after initially being held, eventually crossed for a try. Kyran Devitt proceeded to convert. Albion kept on attacking but were hampered by several handling errors
In the 18th minute, the hosts hit back when with Bridgwater under pressure in their own 22, they conceded a penalty. Then Rideout slotted home to reduce the arrears.
Almost immediately, Albion returned to the attack. Moving the ball wide Josh Frost came in from the opposite wing and burst through the gap to score an unconverted try.
Norton bounced back into the attack before a Devitt mark relieved the pressure. This was followed by an excellent turnover by Aiden Cable, which prevented a try. However, the visitors then kicked the ball straight out to touch. From the resultant scrum, the hosts drove over but were held up. Their scrum half then chipped over the defence, the ball went loose and a scrambled try resulted for Doyle. Rideout converted, making the 10-12 at the break.
The 2nd half
The hosts took the lead at the start of the second half when the visitors kicked the ball straight off the field. From the scrum, Norton moved the ball through their backs and scored a try near the posts. Rideout duly converted, putting them into the lead for the first time.
On 43 minutes, Albion reclaimed the kick-off. Shaun Mahoney burst through and sent his brother Danny over in the corner for a try. Devitt converted which put the visitors back into the lead.
The Albion lost the ball from the kick-off. Midsomer Norton took advantage and crossed for another try. Again converted by Rideout, making the score 24-19.
The visitors came back strongly again with Shaun Mahoney always to the fore and this time with Tom West drove into the Midsomer Norton ranks. However handling errors prevented progress and from one such loss the hosts hacked on down the field and their centre dived onto the loose ball to score a try which Rideout converted.
The visitors looked to hit back firstly through Karolis Urbonas and then Alex and Gavin Knight and Devitt moved the ball well up the left side, followed by a furious assault by the Albion forwards. Shaun Mahoney was held up but scrum half Jon Hill squeezed over to narrow the gap to seven points.
The visitors had the better of the last 20 minutes of the game but their efforts to score were denied as it ended 31-24 to Norton. Albion take two points from this result.
