Bridgwater & Albion RFC 24 -12 Chard RFC

Bridgwater & Albion RFC produced their best performance of the season against Chard at College Way on Saturday afternoon and scored four well-worked tries to run out the deserved winners.

The hosts kicked off, and from the start, there was an urgency about their game.  It wasn’t long before they took the lead, following a good run by Josh Frost. The ball was passed to James Collings, whose grubber kick into left corner found Danny Mahoney.  Mahoney went over for an unconverted try.

Bridgwater maintained the pressure.  On the 12th minute, a strong move down the right wing led to the ball being moved inside to Jon Hill.  This was before Taylor Buller burst through the middle and crashed over to the right of the posts for a try. Kyran Devitt converted.

Shaun Mahoney, who looked threatening throughout the game, made the first of several strong breaks covering over 40 metres before being thwarted.

Chard pushed into Bridgwater territory

With 20 minutes of the first half gone and the home side leading 12-0, Chard started to string some moves together. They produced their first real incursion into Bridgwater territory.

They were awarded a penalty for holding which was kicked to touch close to the left hand corner flag, and maintained the pressure  with two scrums but the Bridgwater defence held firm.

However, on the half hour, Chard got themselves onto the scoreboard.  Winger, James Whitlock saw space in the middle and ran through to score a try. Jason Wyatt converted.

Just before the half-time break, Frost made another strong break before offloading to Devitt.  Devitt went over for an unconverted try, making it 17-7 at half-time.

Chard strong after the interval

Chard came out strongly after the interval.  10 minutes after the restart Jack Elliott scored an unconverted try in the right-hand corner to narrow the gap.

Bridgwater responded forcefully.  Following another strong break through the middle by Frost, he kicked cross-field to touch in the right-hand corner. From the line out, an attempted clearance on their own line from Chard found its way to the left hand corner.  This was where Danny Mahoney was on hand to catch it and touch down for a try. Converted by Frost.

The remainder of the second half was as keenly contested.  Despite Albion being in the ascendancy and threatening the Chard line on several occasions, there was no further score.  The game ended, Bridgwater and Albion 24- Chard 12, a welcome return to winning ways.

The Albion will be hoping to repeat this performance this weekend when they travel away to play Midsomer Norton.  Midsomer Norton were beaten 48-34 at Dings Crusaders on Saturday.
