Gordon League RFC 26 – 22 Bridgwater & Albion RFC.
Gordon League 26-22 Bridgwater & Albion RFC.
Bridgwater & Albion RFC made the trip north up the M5 to Gloucester to play against Gordon League, who before this game had not won a match. After fighting their way back into the game in the end the Albion were beaten by their indiscipline. This saw them incur five yellow and one red card that reduced to 13 players at one time.
The home side got off to a flyer and within four minutes they had taken a 12 point lead. The first came when second rower Ryan Stephens crashed over in the corner. Soon after, winger Badger crossed to score a try. Holder converted this.
Albion then came back well with both Lewis Plece and George Sluman going close but the opposition defence held.
The visitors continued to attack and in the 24th minute they were rewarded when great work by Aiden Cable up the right created some space and when the ball was worked back across the field Kyran Devitt sent in Plece to score.
In the 35th Minute..
Great work in defence by Plece and Charlie Willcox saw Jon Hill burst through. The ball was passed across the line, and James Brakes went over in the corner.
Just before half time, James Collings kicked to touch. The Albion won a line out deep in Gordon League territory. This ended with the Collings scoring a try, which Devitt converted to make it 12-17 at the break.
In the second half Gordon League pressed relentlessly. For much of the time the Albion were restricted to their own half. This led to frustration and a series of cards.
All Bridgwater & Albion RFC replacements on after the restart
Ten minutes after the re-start, all three replacements Harvey Fisher, Shaun Mahoney and Josh Frost came on and despite their depleted numbers, the Albion were holding their own in defence.
In the 62nd minute, they finally worked their way out of the own half. Excellent work by Karolis Urbonas took them onto the attack, then great handling by Collings, Willcox and Devitt released Mahoney who ran in to score in the corner.
A huge clearance by Collings once again put the visitors in a good position but all to no avail as Gordon League went back on the attack. They took advantage of their numerical supremacy, created space up the left for Badger to go in for his second try. This was converted by Holder to make the score 19-22.
Two further yellow cards, and a red for Josh Parker, saw Gordon League pressing again and centre Thomas burst through for the winning score. Holder converted.
Gordon League attacked until the end, but the Albion defence held out until the final whistle as the game ended 26-22 to the hosts.
