The Old Bristolians 31- 36 Bridgwater & Albion RFC

Bridgwater & Albion RFC continued their climb away from the relegation zone when they beat Old Bristolians to notch up their fourth victory of the season on Saturday.

However, after dominating with four first-half tries the hosts came back strongly after the break.  Then the Albion rallied and came away the 36-31 victors.

Old Bristolians started the game at a high pace.  It took some excellent defence over the course of the first 10 minutes to keep them at bay. However, in the 13th minute, their second row forward burst through to score.

Albion came back well and kicked into the home 22, then plundered the line out.  The ball reached Shaun Mahoney, who stormed over for a try.  Kyran Devitt added the extras to.

Old Bristolians moved the ball well from the kick off.  In the 19th minute took the lead when their centre jinked through the defence to score a converted try.

Three minutes later the visitors came back forcefully and after taking the ball up the left hand side Devitt chipped through.  Jono Hayes pounced on the ball to score a try, which Devitt converted. This put Albion back into the lead 14-12.

The hosts bounced back slowly

The hosts bounced back strongly but were repelled by the Albion, who then produced a couple of terrific drives.  The pack pushed their opponents back 30 metres to force a penalty, and a line out deep in the 22. Unfortunately the ball was lost.

In the 32nd minute, a storming run by Alex Knight created a gap for Devitt to run through for a try.

Almost immediately, Owen’s long kick was misfielded by the OB’s full back which Hayes pursued and won a scrum.  Then Mahoney went over to score his second try of the game, which Devitt converted.

With five minutes remaining the Albion pack again drove pushing the hosts back. The were awarded a penalty, opted to take a scrum in view of their power, tried to push over but the try was disallowed. From the next scrum however Alex Knight squeezed over at the post for a try Devitt converted making it 33-12 at half time.

Bristolians came out strongly and after a minute winger Joe Davis went over for a converted try. They remained on the attack but the Albion defence in mid field was excellent.

Owen’s kicked to the corner

Owen’s kicked to the corner, Urbonas and Mahoney drove hard but were stopped before a burst up the left by debutant Jay Darrell kept the attack going and they were awarded a penalty which Devitt converted making it 36-19.

In the 70th minute the hosts created space which allowed Davis to go over for his second which was converted.  OB’s kept pressing and two minutes later they scored another try which was unconverted to make it 36-31.

In the remaining few minutes the Albion defence kept the home side at bay and a couple of bursts relieved the pressure before the referee brought proceedings to a close.

This Saturday, the Albion host Clifton Seconds who last weekend triumphed 31-14 over high flying Dings Crusaders, kick off 2pm.
