St Ives RFC 29 – 12 Bridgwater & Albion RFC
Bridgwater & Albion RFC are out of the Papa Johns Trophy after they were beaten by St Ives on Saturday afternoon.
The Albion team put up and good performance but in the end the Cornish side were the deserved 29-12 winners.
St Ives started strongly and from the kick off they mounted a series of attacks. |In the sixth minute Albion lost a scrum near their own line and as it wheeled, the scrum half spotted a gap and raced over to score a converted try.
Shortly after the scrum half broke through and was held at the expense of a penalty. The penalty was tapped, and the forwards rumbled and the second row crashed over for another converted try.
Albion came back strongly
Finding themselves 14-0 behind after 10 minutes Albion came back strongly. From the kick off, the ball ended up with Alex Knight. He ran strongly to score – yet again, which was converted to halve the deficit.
Using the breeze to their advantage, the visitors enjoyed a good period of play. This included some good handling and long passes in midfield causing a few problems to the St Ives defence.
However, there was no further score until the 31st minute. St Ives were trying to run the ball out of defence and dropped it. Trystan Hudson swooped and dashed in to score an unconverted try.
Ended 12 -14 at halftime
Albion then pressed for another try before the break but the St Ives cover just held as it ended 12-14 at half time.
After the restart St Ives took the initiative from the off and a good kick to the corner. A scrum followed, St Ives won the ball, worked it into the centre who stepped inside and scored a try. This was converted.
Josh Frost and Lewis Plece combined well in the middle of the field to create space. St Ives kept up the pressure and pushed the Albion back.
After another period of even play, St Ives broke up the right wing, maintained the pressure on the Albion defence and when the ball came back inside, the forwards rumbled over for an unconverted try.
Bridgwater & Albion RFC did have chances
In the remaining play Albion had chances when both James Collings and Frost went close but St Ives held the initiative. In the very last minute, they kicked a penalty to make the final score 29-12.
This was a game performance from an Albion side that featured a couple of debutants, but this defeat marks the end of the 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, Albion Ladies played their final match of the season when they hosted their Bude counterparts at College Way and ran out the 41-38 winners.
