Knock out for Bridgwater & Albion RFC

Bridgwater & Albion RFC are out of the RFU Community Cup after being beaten at Wiveliscombe by a team that adapted better to the conditions and took full advantage of their pitch.

The visitors kicked off down the slope and with the wind behind them.  After an evenly contested opening period of play, it was Wiveliscombe who took the lead on 15 minutes.  Following a five metre scrum, their winger went over for a try in the left corner that was converted.

Bridgwater worked their way back into Wiveliscombe territory and forced a scrum close to the posts, but this was cleared by a solid home defence. The visitors mounted several attacks, but on a couple of occasions, the slippery ball was dropped, and their advances came to nothing.

Just before the half-hour mark, Albion were awarded a penalty, which Jay Owens kicked to right touch 15 metres out. From the line out the ball changed hands a number of times before Tom West crashed over for an unconverted try.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC grew in confidence

The visitors were growing in confidence and continued to attack the home line.  But, each time were frustrated by the Wiveliscombe defence.

The hosts continued to look for every opportunity to attack.  Within three minutes of the first half remaining, they were awarded a penalty for a high tackle.  Their full back slotted between the posts to extend the lead.

However, their lead was short-lived.  Just before the break, another Owens penalty was kicked to touch.  From the line out Karolis Urbonas found a way through to score a try to level the scores at 10-10 at half time.

Wivelliscombe RFC relentless on restart

From the restart, Wiveliscombe came onto the attack.  They took every opportunity to kick the ball downfield into the corners to take full advantage of the slope.

The Bridgwater defence worked hard to keep the early advancers at bay. Aiden Cable made a strong break from defence but sadly it came to nothing.

Ten minutes into the second half Wiveliscombe won a scrum near the half way line.  They then kicked the ball deep into Albion territory close to touch. From the ensuing line up the home scrum half gathered the ball and went over for a converted try.

Bridgwater regrouped quickly, and Urbonas made a strong run through the middle, but this again came to nothing. Youngsters Rowan Bird and Will Clapham both made impressive breaks, but on each occasion the attack broke down.

With the game ebbing away, Bridgwater made several desperate attempts to get over the home line.  Unfortunately on each occasion they were unsuccessful, as the game ended 17-10 to the hosts.
