Chard 37-26 Bridgwater & Albion RFC – Match Day Report

Chard 37-26 Bridgwater & Albion RFC

Chard has rarely been a happy hunting ground for Bridgwater & Albion RFC and that was the case once again on Saturday afternoon when it was the South Somerset side who triumphed at the end of a hard fought contest.

This was a game however, that the visitors could have won had they not suffered lapses of concentration.  This allowed Chard to score against the run of play, but at least the Albion take a bonus point.  This may yet prove all-important come the end of the season.

Chard kicked off and, within three minutes, took the lead following a lineout in the left-hand corner.

Large crowd at Chard ground

Spurred on by a large and vociferous crowd, the hosts continued to create pressure and kept Albion in their own half, but their defence held firm.

With 20 minutes gone, the visitors were awarded a penalty that was kicked to touch near the left-hand post.  From the ensuing lineout and after several attempts, Danny Mahoney crossed for a try to level the scores.

Chard bounced back quickly and regained the lead when Emil Szydelko scored a converted try.

The Albion mounted several attacks but on each occasion they came up short.  Just before half-time, Kyran Devitt kicked to right-hand touch and from the line out a catch and drive saw Harvey Fisher crash over for a try.  Devitt then converted to make the score 12-12 at the break.

Halftime

The visitors came out strongly after the break and created a period of pressure from the restart. After several phases, Harry Pentelow scored a try to the right of the posts, which Devitt added the extras to, putting Albion into the lead for the first time in the match.

The lead was short-lived, however and almost from the kick off Chard drew back level with a converted try in the left-hand corner.

From that point, Chard were very much in the ascendancy and over the next 25 minutes scored 18 points- two tries, one of which was converted and two penalties, that took the game away from the visitors.

In the last few minutes, Albion raised their game again and earned a bonus point when skipper Taylor Buller went over for a try, which Devitt converted to make the final score 37-26.

Meanwhile, in the game between the two Second XVs at College Way it was Bridgwater & Albion who beat their Chard counterparts 24-15.  A result that sees them climb to second in the table.

The First XV are without a game this coming weekend but return to action when they host Midsomer Norton on Saturday 11th April.
