Bridgwater & Albion RFC 17 v Midsomer Norton 50

| 14/04/2026

Bridgwater & Albion RFC First XV hosted an in-form Midsomer Norton side, who in their two most recent matches had beaten the first and second sides in Western Counties (North).

The visitors made their intentions clear from the start.  Within five minutes took the lead with a try left of the posts.  This was converted. On the 15-minute mark, the lead was doubled when the ball was moved across the backs for another converted try.

Shortly after, Albion’s captain, Taylor Buller, was helped off the field injured and played no further part in the match. The loss of their skipper, combined with a hailstorm, seemed to spur the hosts into action.  On 18 minutes, Lewis Plece crashed over for a try.  Jon Hill converted, making the score 7-14. Albion continued to look to attack but were unable to find a way through the visitors’ defence.

Constant threat from Midsomer Norton Backs

Midsomer Norton’s backs posed a constant threat throughout the match.  A lineout on the right created pressure on the Albion line and resulted in a converted try.

The hosts were quickly back down the opposite end, blitzing the Norton line but each time they were beaten back and Albion were left empty-handed.

The action quickly moved to the opposite end.  Norton broke from their own territory to score in the right corner.

Albion once again went straight back onto the attack.  They were awarded a penalty that was kicked to the left-hand corner. From the line out, the ball was moved across the backs until it found Josh Frost, who went over for an unconverted try near the right-hand corner.  This made the score 12-26 and the break.

The hosts started the second half strongly and immediately worked their way deep into Norton territory. They maintained the pressure and won a five-metre scrum, but try as they may, they couldn’t breach the visitors’ defence and eventually the ball was cleared.

Soon after, Albion found themselves reduced to 13 players.  First, Harry Pentelow and then Karolis Urbonas were yellow carded in the space of five minutes. Norton took advantage and, during their numerical advantage, scored two converted tries to take the score to 12-40.

Albion kept coming forward

Despite being in arrears Albion kept coming forward.  They were awarded a penalty well into the Norton half, Frost took it quickly, and a series of drives for the line followed, but the defence held firm, yet again.

With Albion again in a strong position, the referee stumbled and the game was halted briefly. After the restart Jay Owens kicked to touch and from the line out Kyran Devitt went over for a try. As Albion pressed in vain for their bonus point try, Norton scored a two further unconverted tries before the final whistle ended with the score 17-50.

This game doubled as the semi final of the Webb Ellis Somerset County Cup which means Norton now go through to the final.

This Saturday sees the Albion travel to face top of the table Naiisea and Backwell.
