Bridgwater & Albion got their league season off to a winning start when they beat Avon Rugby Club on Saturday.
This was the first league meeting between the two sides and the Albion team contained three players who were making their debuts.
The hosts created early pressure and and after winning an early line out tried to force their way over the line but the Albion defence held firm.
Albion then started to find their way into Avon territory and almost scored before a forward pass brought the move to an end.
In the 15th minute a break by stand off Jay Owens created space for Rowan Traynor to run in and score a try that Jon Hill converted.
Avon came back strongly and put the Albion line under pressure, but great work by Karolis Urbonas turned over the ball and Kyran Devitt cleared.
Just before half time Avon lost the ball in midfield which Ryan Barnett snapped up and ran in 45 metres to score a try by the posts which Hill converted making the half time score 14-0 to the visitors.
In the second minute after the re-start Albion extended the lead when they won a line out on the left hand side, the ball was moved along the line with both Williams and Devitt prominent, the latter then passed back inside to the supporting Shaun Mahoney- the leader of the pack- who crashed over for an unconverted try.
Avon hit back immediately as their forwards swarmed the line and the second row forced his way over for a try which was converted.
In the 47th minuted the Avon centre found himself in space and ran straight through the Albion defence to score a converted try making it 19-14 to the visitors.
Albion then regained their poise and attacked strongly with Urbonas very much to the fore and gained a penalty which Owens slotted home.
Avon came back again but Ryan Barnett played well under pressure in defence and through Rowan Traynor and Nathan Golding the ball was moved back into opposition territory.
In the 65th minute Avon used their backs to full affect and scored a converted try to bring them to within one point of the visitors.
With 15 minutes remaining Albion took hold of the situation and camped inside the Avon 22 metre line. Traynor and Mahoney both made half breaks before the ball came to Harry Pentelow who released winger Jono Hayes who sped in to score by the posts which Hill duly converted, making the final score 29-21.
