| 16/02/2019

South West One (West)

Bridgwater stretched their winning run to eight games but they were made to work hard for the points in a bruising encounter against a physical Lydney side.

Cheered on by their largest crowd of the season it was the visitors who took the lead after three minutes when Joe Hamlen slotted home a penalty.

Lydney maintained their early pressure and made several incursions deep into Albion territory but each time the home side stood firm to repel the attack.

After 15 minutes the home side drew level thanks to skipper Stuart Heal who kicked a penalty from the 22 metre line. Bridgwater then enjoyed a good period of pressure themselves, and produced a good move across the backs but were unable to find the try line.

On the half hour Lydney mounted an attack down the left had flank that resulted eventually in an unconverted try from Alan Nelmes, which made the score 3-8, shortly after which the hosts had a player yellow carded.

Bridgwater started the second half on the attack and got their just rewards after three minutes when Matt Ranson crashed over for a try from close range which Heal added the extras to, which made the score 10-8

However soon after Lydney were awarded another penalty which Hamlen kicked to edge his side back in front.

Bridgwater started to string their passes together and mounted another attack which eventually culminated in James Collings finding space on the right to go over for a try which Heal converted to put the hosts back in front.

The longer the game went on the more tense it became and with 15 minutes remaining it boiled over into a fracas involving players from both sides.

The referee eventually spoke to the captains and the game restarted, but the tension continued and in the dying minutes Lydney had two yellow carded and ended with just 13 players on the field.
