BRIDGWATER & ALBION MOURNS LAST OF THE DATE BROTHERS – STEPHEN DATE

Members of Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club will be saddened at the news of the death of Stephen Date recently. Steve was one of five Date brothers who all played for the club and was the last survivor. His siblings Alan, Lionel, Frank and Trevor were all forwards but Steve was a bustling scrum-half and also a talented versatile back as he played in all of the back positions for Albion’s sides.

Steve was a Colt with the club in the early 1960’s and progressed into the senior ranks and where he largely played for the club into the 1970’s in our United (2nd) XV where he built a strong half-back partnership with Roy Chidgey which particularly came to prominence in the United XV 1965/6 season when the team lost just three games and all by narrow 3 point margins. Whilst Steve was an occasional 1st XV player, he was content to ply his skills in our United and Athletic XV’s over several seasons. Later on in his career, he surprised perhaps himself and many others by putting in a stint at stand-off in our 1st XV in times of need where he did a fine job.

He was a typical scrum-half always in the thick of things linking well between the forwards and backs with a fine service and tactical nous. He also played with considerable spirit in his own bustling style and was a very popular team-mate. He also appeared occasionally for North Petherton.

Bridgwater & Albion sends its sincere condolences to Sue and her family with thanks for Steve’s loyal attachment, enthusiasm and efforts for the club.

Steve’s funeral is being held at St George’s Church, Wembdon on Friday 10 May at 11 am.
