CHRISTOPHER KETTLE – A GREAT “FRIEND” TO BRIDGWATER & ALBION
Members of Bridgwater & Albion RFC will be sad to have learnt of the death of Christopher (Chris) Kettle last week. Chris had been an avid follower of the club for many years and regularly attended matches. His work at British Cellophane again over many years brought him into contact with countless Albion players and officials thus engendering the great Bridgwater spirit.
Chris provided great assistance to the club in various committee positions and it was his role in being a founder of the “Friends” of Bridgwater & Albion which will have left his significant contribution to the club’s welfare. He and the band of other like-minded supporters and former officials gathered together and promoted various events – usually lunches on two occasions per season which proved to be very popular with many members bringing guests and which brought in significant financial return to the club. That was then spent on the club’s requirements through capital expenditure to enhance the ground and clubhouse; provision of kit and other playing requisites; assistance with traveling expenses for recruitment of overseas players; etc. Whilst the “Friends” organisation is no more having recently disbanded, the club was delighted that Chris was in attendance at the farewell occasion in March this year when the club was given the residue of funds – a not inconsiderable £15,000 – to be used judiciously on the club’s requirements both immediate and for the future.
Chris was also involved in other local recreational, cultural and charitable organisations and particularly Bridgwater Operatic Society with whom he was associated for many years and again, assisted the organisation in creating its funds to mount its spectacular shows. It is perhaps ironic that this very week the Society promotes its latest show at the McMillan Theatre.
Bridgwater & Albion sends its sincere condolences to Nancy and her family with thanks for Chris’s long-time involvement both concerning rugby football and Bridgwater matters generally.
