Clifton Second XV 33 – 26 Bridgwater & Albion RFC

| 17/03/2025

Bridgwater & Albion RFC 1st XV’s unbeaten run came to an end when despite a strong second-half comeback they were beaten by Clifton who are second in the table.

Clifton started well and claimed the early territory, but the visitor’s defence was good. Bridgwater could have taken the lead in the eighth minute, but the ball was knocked on close to the try line.

From the resultant scrum, the Clifton stand-off broke.  With good handling from the backs, the scrum half ran in from a distance to score a try which was converted.  Albion bounced straight back.  They were again unlucky when Kyran Devitt chipped ahead but was unable to gather the ball when he was in a good position.

The game was even for a period until the 29th minute when Clifton worked their way into Albion territory.  From a line out, their second row drove straight over for a try.  This was again converted.  Immediately from the kick-off Clifton moved the ball well and made some good ground before their scrum half went over for a converted try making it 21-0.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC came back strongly

Albion again came back strongly.  Taylor Buller made good ground supported by Alex Knight.  Then Tom Hopkins eventually crashed over for an unconverted try.

For the last few minutes of the first half the visitors were on the attack but were unable to score.  This made the score 21-5 at the break.

From the re-start, it was Clifton who pressed.  From a line out 10 metres out they drove well.  One of their forwards bundled over for an unconverted try.

In the 46th minute, Albion hit back when firstly Buller and then Karolis Urbonas carried well  and then Charlie Willcox made good ground before going over for a try which Devitt converted making the score 26-12.

The visitors were now very much in the ascendancy and some good inter passing between the backs and the forwards took them back onto the attack. George Sluman burst through but was held up, as the Clifton defence just held firm.

On the hour following a penalty, the visitors swarmed the Clifton line.  Buller almost went over from a tap penalty, and from the following ruck, Alex Knight crashed over for a try.  The trusty boot of Devitt converted.

Clifton kept up pressure

However, Clifton weren’t done yet and came back, kicked a penalty into touch five metres out.  After several attempts, their forwards went over for another converted try making it 33-19.

In the 71st minute, Albion took the ball down to the Clifton 22.  From a line out Alex Knight went over for his second try.  Devitt added the extras to from a wide angle.

In the final few minutes, the visitors tried their hardest to get another score but Clifton defended well and the game ended 33-26.

Bridgwater takes two points from this game, one for scoring four tries and the other for a losing bonus.

On Saturday the Albion travel to the Forest of Dean to take on Cinderford Seconds.  They then return to College Way on 29th March to host Gordon League.
