Geoff reflects…

…on defeat at top of table Devonport Services

The Albion may have lost lost out to the top team after a slow start but Geoff Sluman their director of rugby praised his side for the way that they fought back in the second half.

“You don’t visit the side at the top of the table and expect an easy game. It was very competitive. It should have been a little more equal but we didn’t get off to a great start and were playing catch up for the rest of the match.”

He went on:”Some strange things happened during the game but yet again the Bridgy team stuck to their task. At half time we were 26-5 down. At full time 40-24 therefore, we outscored the league leaders in the second half by 14-19 on their home ground.

“We also gained a bonus point for scoring four tries and I don’t imagine many sides will score four tries against Services on their home soil.

“However, there is plenty for us to work on and the coaches made the point about tightening defences. We didn’t come here to pluck comfort out of statistics, we came to win and that is our target going forward.
“We had another player debut – Tim Blades, who equipped himself very well. We are developing more strength in depth.“

Geoff paid tribute to Dan Kemmish for who the Devonport game marked a milestone.
“ However the story of the day has to go to Dan Kemmish who captained the side on his milestone 400th first team appearance for the club – a remarkable achievement and in every one of those games he has played to a very high standard and totally committed to our cause. Congratulations and a big thank you to Dan from all of us.”

Sluman went on:”The second team had a great win on Saturday against Bristol Harlequins who were top of the table in Somerset One. The win means our Second team leapfrog them and are now top of their league. It is very early days though to spend too much time thinking about league positions but it is a very encouraging start.”
Next week the first team are home to seventh placed Hornets, whilst the Second team are away to third placed Cheddar Valley. Games kick off at 3pm so please come along and support Bridgwater and Albion if you can.
