Geoff Says

| 15/11/2019

Geoff Sluman the Bridgwater and Albion director of rugby was happy to return from playing on Newent’s famous sloping pitch with a victory.

Geoff said: “It was a game of attrition for both sides but like I said a few weeks ago when we played Lydney,  you don’t play sides from Gloucestershire and expect an easy game.

“Newent play their sloping pitch very well. It slopes from one end to the other but also from one touchline to the other – they have it mastered. Newent enjoyed an extra weeks rest than us due to the way the fixtures fall so they were fresh and ready for the challenge.

“The weather was also a challenge with the going officially “very Soft” in racing terms and that made it a bit of a leveller. Throw into that the fact that they are working hard to get themselves out of the relegation zone and you can see we had our hands full on against them. In the four seasons we have been in the same league together I don’t recall us winning away to  Newent.

He added: “So for all of those reasons, that is why we can be very satisfied with an away win and the well-earned four league points. I am pleased for all of the players who worked hard and earned their victory.

“Our second team had a difficult away fixture on Friday evening away to Crewkerne, where they unfortunately lost and have slipped to third place in the Tribute Somerset One league. Next Saturday they travel to Midsomer Norton whom currently sit in eleventh place.”

Next week Albion return to College Way on Saturday afternoon to entertain Newton Abbott.

Geoff added:” They are currently in twelfth place in the league but were relegated from the league above into South West One (West) this season so we will have to be wary of them. The game will kick off at 3pm so please come and support if you can.”
