Gordon League 40 – 14 Bridgwater & Albion RFC

Bridgwater and Albion RFC travelled up the M5  to Gloucester on Saturday to play against newly promoted Gordon League. This was the first meeting between the two sides for 30 years.  At the end of the match, the hosts ran out as the winners.

Playing on a sloping pitch the visitors made a bright start and moved the ball well. The first quarter of the game was evenly contested.  In the 20th minute, a stray clearance was picked up by Gordon League.  They ran it back deep into Bridgwater territory before finding Number 8 Raybould who was illegally impeded.  This resulted in a penalty try.

Albion bounced back

Albion bounced back well through Kyran Devitt who was in dazzling form.  He made a strong run down the right wing. The visitors then won a series of penalties.  Then Tom West went over for a try that Devitt converted to level the scores.

Then Bridgwater came close to extending their lead.  Jay Owens released Devitt who cut across the field but was held up on the line.

On the stroke of halftime, Albion took the lead when Devitt intercepted a pass and ran to the line to score a try.  He then added the extras to, making it 7-14 at the break.

At the start of the second half Albion played well up the slope, but on 10 minutes Gordon League made their local knowledge count as Gamston went over for an unconverted try.

Albion kept challenging and trying to come forward but on the hour it was Gordon League who scored.  Scrum-half Stephens darted over the line to score a try which Gamston converted.

Visitors maintained energy

The visitors maintained their energy levels well and despite trailing kept on mounting attacks.

With 10 minutes remaining however Gordon League enjoyed a period of pressure and after a series of moves, Badham crashed over for a try which Gamston converted.

The last few minutes of the game saw the home side fully exploiting the slope of the pitch scoring two converted tries.  The first of which was scored by Goodall and the second by Sperring.  Both of which were converted by the trusty boot of Gamston, making the final score 40-14.

On Saturday the Albion host Clifton Second XV at College Way starting at 3pm, another tough side who last weekend beat Taunton Seconds.
