It’s Geoff Says

Geoff Sluman, Bridgwater and Albion’s director of rugby was happy with his side’s victory over Devonport Services on Saturday afternoon at College Way.

However he was disappointed that the Albion failed to gain the bonus point from the game.

“Some may be surprised but we have mixed feelings about the win against Devonport Services. In one respect we are happy to win against a side that has been top of our league for the majority of the season – they were only not top this week because they have a game in hand. We were also pleased with the way we managed the second half to maintain our lead.

“On the other hand, we are disappointed we didn’t score a fourth try to secure a bonus point. I think that is a good sign of our side that played on Saturday; that they set themselves those expectations and put themselves in a position to deliver them.”

Geoff went on: “However, if you asked us at the start of the day if we would be happy with a four point win we would have undoubtedly said yes.

“We have been awarding an E18ghteen Gin Man of the Match for home games this season. This week there were many players who could have been given the award so I think it was such a good team performance that it will be awarding an E18ghteen Gin team of the week.”

Sadly the Albion had to concede their Second XV fixture with Bristol Harlequins because they could not field a front row and a front row replacement.

“This was caused by two players withdrawing with injury on the day of the game. We knew we were asking a lot in them playing but in the end common sense and safety had to take priority.

“Whilst I am disappointed we had to take the decisions we did, I am pleased that we put player welfare above a desire to play a match.”

Looking ahead Geoff said: “ Next week our first team are without a fixture whilst our Second XI host North Petherton on Friday evening, kicking at 19:30 so please come along and support if you can.”
