LAWRENCE STEWART (LARRY) CALLARD – RIP

LAWRENCE STEWART (LARRY) CALLARD

Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club has received the sad news that Larry Callard passed away on 10 May 2023 aged 77.

Larry joined our Colts XV on leaving Westover School in the early 1960’s where he played as a prop forward and continued in that position through our senior ranks. After graduating through our Colts XV, he appeared in a particularly successful United (2nd) XV in the mid-1960’s and made his 1st XV debut in the 1965/66 season and continued to be a useful 1st XV squad member for several seasons.

Throughout all of his career with the club which lasted until the late 1970’s Larry faced considerable competition for the prop positions in the 1st XV. He was certainly not the archetypical prop forward – not being lumbering in size but that overlooked his ability to scrummage well and his particular forte was his excellent mauling – when using his smaller stature he invariably clamped on opposition ball and invariably came out with it on our side.

Larry was an engaging character and made a full contribution to Bridgwater & Albion life during his career. He was also known as Larry the Lamb but again that belied his resilience and toughness.

Larry’s son Greg followed in his father’s traditions and also appeared in our Colts XV.

Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club extends its full and sincere condolences to Larry’s family with thanks for his significant playing contributions and attachments.
