North Petherton Seconds XV 15 – 19 Bridgwater & Albion RFC Second XV

| 16/02/2025

With Bridgwater & Albion RFC’s First XV home game against Gordon League on Saturday falling foul of the weather, the focus of attention shifted to the Second XV’s away game against their North Petherton counterparts.

Having lost their two previous matches in Counties 3 Tribute Somerset South the Albion were keen to bounce back to winning ways.  This was achieved and they claimed bragging rights over their local rivals 19-15.

This was a game of two halves played in front of a good-sized crowd swollen by several Albion fans.

Playing down the slope the visitors were on top from the start.  They created several scoring opportunities but were unable to take the lead. Petherton made limited visits into the Albion half and when they did were quickly repelled.

Albion broke the deadlock

On 25 minutes, however, the Albion eventually broke the deadlock when the forwards drove.  Rory Hobbs went over to score a try which Cam Hellier converted.

The visitors doubled their lead just before the half hour when following good work by the forwards Leigh Parker went over for a try.  Hellier again converted, to make the score 14-0.

There was good interplay between the forwards and backs for Bridgwater with both Cam Modley and Hellier linking well with Joe Bussell.  In the 37th minute the Albion powered through the middle.  They moved the ball to the wing where Jono Hayes went over for an unconverted try.  This made the score 19-0 at the break.

Petherton came out strongly after the break and after five minutes the home backs picked up a loose ball and went through to score a try that was converted making it 19-7.

Pethy kicked a penalty

On 53 minutes the home side reduced the arrears when they kicked a penalty.  After which they kept up the pressure on the Albion line, but some good defence and the slippery conditions prevented any further scoring for a period.

In the dying minutes, North Petherton won the ball at a line out and sent the ball down the line where their centre went over for an unconverted try to make the final score 19-15.

This weekend see the Albion First XV travel to play against Chosen Hill Former Pupils who they beat 24-17 when the two sides met back in October.
