Return to action after the Christmas break for Bridgwater & Albion RFC

| 03/01/2024

Bridgwater & Albion RFC return to Western Counties (North) League action on Saturday afternoon.  They host Old Redcliffians Seconds at College Way kick off 2.30pm.

After being relegated at the end of last season Albion have enjoyed a much more successful campaign.  The side currently find themselves in fifth place in the league table with 38 points from their 12 matches.  Seven of which they have won.

Some of the games that were lost narrowly might on other occasions have been won.  In addition to which the away match against Midsomer Norton was postponed because of the weather.

This season the Albion have looked  a more cohesive unit and played much more as a team.  This is of little surprise.  Many of those who have played have come up through the ranks so know each other well.

In the last league match before the break away at Barton Hill almost half of those in the team had started their rugby career at Bridgwater & Albion RFC.  So from being juniors at the club they have a real allegiance to Bridgwater & Albion.

Top level coaching set up at Bridgwater & Albion pays dividends

In addition to which several other players have been at the club some time.  The style of rugby that Geoff Sluman and the coaching team are working towards is starting to take affect.

Junior and Colts Team coming up the ranks

A testament to the strength of the Junior and Colts section was clear to see when seven Albion youngsters played for Somerset Under 18s against Cornwall.  This was early December at Hartpury College.

In the next round of the Somerset RFU Cup competition Bridgwater and Albion have been drawn to play against Taunton Seconds.  This will be played on 10th February.

Regarding Albion’s opponents on Saturday, the two sides met on September 23rd in the away fixture.  It was Old Reds who won 40-26, so the hosts will be hoping to even things up at the weekend.

Old Reds however will present tough opponents and are one place above Albion in the league with 42 points from the same number of games, eight of which have been won.
