BRIDGWATER & ALBION JOIN IN MOURNING FOR PASSING OF LOCAL SPORTSMAN – DAVID SMITH AGED 78

Bridgwater & Albion players from the early 1960’s through to the 1970’s will recall playing with David Smith – a diminutive, versatile utility back.  Dave was also prominent in local cricket circles – appearing for Spaxton and Kilve amongst other clubs.

Dave emerged from our Colts XV in the early 1960’s and mainly assisted the then newly formed Athletic (now Dirtrackers) XV where some of his team mates were the legendary Jack Smith (no relation), Chippie Chappell and Alan Manchip.  Dave was a popular member of the team as he was capable of playing in any of the backs positions and for that matter, also assisted up front when the occasion demanded.  He made several appearances in our United XV during his career.  He thoroughly enjoyed his games on the field and continued such spirit off the field.  Dave continued his sporting pursuits in the summer on the cricket field and he played that game longer than he did rugby football.  After his playing days Dave supported the club and cricket in the area as his son Paul had also joined Bridgwater & Albion and proved to be as versatile a player as his father; he also played a good standard of club cricket in the area with Wembdon, Bridgwater and Kilve.

The club offers its sincere condolences to Dave’s family with thanks for his wholehearted commitment to his games.  His funeral takes place at Sedgemoor Crematorium on Friday 5 June at 10 am.
