Bridgwater and Albion RFC still without win

Bridgwater and Albion RFC are still without a win to their name after slipping to their third successive defeat of the season at the hands of Crediton on Saturday afternoon.

Fielding their strongest side to date Albion competed strongly in the first half but in the second half the hosts capitalised on some mistakes and ran out the deserved winners.

After eight minutes Crediton opened the scoring when their winger Woodland capped off a 45 metre run with a try that Avery- Wright converted.

Extended Lead to Crediton

The home side extended their lead a few minutes afterwards when following a tap penalty Mingo was bundled over for a try which Avery-Wright added the extras to.

The visitors got themselves onto the scoresheet when the returning Wayne Sprangle crashed over for a try following a good break by Oskar White. Crediton responded strongly and won a penalty which Avery-Wright kicked.

Just before half time Kyran Devitt chased his own kick as a result of which Bridgwater and Albion RFC were awarded a penalty.  This in turn led to a rolling maul from which Gavin Knight went over for a try that Stuart Heal converted, which made the score 17-12 at the interval.

The first 10 minutes of the second half were evenly contested but on 50 minutes Bridgwater and Albion RFC were awarded a penalty for offside which Heal slotted home. Once again however Crediton were awarded a penalty which Avery- Wright duly kicked to make the score 20-15.

The full back kicked another three points soon after which Crediton took advantage of a handling error.  Then Hooper scored a try which Avery- Wright converted.

With 10 minutes to go Woodland went over for his second try of the game to make the final score 35-15 to the hosts.

Afterwards, Geoff Sluman, Director of Rugby said…

“ The game against Crediton was a bit of a Groundhog Day. This week we only lost two players through injury in the first 15 mins whereas in the previous two weeks it was three players.

“Despite arriving late due to motorway congestion we started the first half well.  At half time we probably finished as the dominant side but we were 5 points behind but with the game definitely capable of a win for us.

“It just went wrong in the second half or probably it was just the fact that our opposition really stepped up their performance.

Staying positive at Bridgwater and Albion RFC

Geoff went on: “I tried to pick the players up after the game but they were overly critical of themselves.  It was reassuring to observe that level of commitment and desire to improve. We are not overly concerned as we know exactly where we are and what we have to do.”

He added: “Next week provides the perfect opportunity to show some improvement with a home game against Devonport Services.  We kick off at 15:00.”
