After week off due to the Somerset cup fixture the United XV made a welcome return to action at college way this weekend, hosting local rivals Hornets RFC, in a hotly thought contest with the lead changing sides throughout the match it was the visitors who eventually came out on top with a deserved win.

Albion started slow as the match day ensemble struggled to find rhythm playing together and the lineout struggling to function the visitors put a large amount of pressure on the home defence which eventually leaked a try after 10 minutes of back and forth by the two sides with the Hornets winger breaking through a number of would be tacklers to score on the opposite wing. 5-0

From the kick off, Bridgwater conceded a penalty for not releasing the tackled player at the ruck, an offence committed far too frequently throughout the game testing the referee’s patience and were forced back deep into their own half, the resulting lineout was driven and repelled by the meaty home pack eventually conceding a scrum, through which Bridgwater showed dominance all day, the lines were cleared and Albion had some breathing room. The next few minutes Bridgwater put increasing pressure on the visitors in defence and eventually were rewarded with a penalty as a result of the Hornets poor ruck discipline, dutifully kicked by Hill. 5-3.

The pressure on the visitor’s line continued from the restart with the bulky forwards working overtime at the scrums and john hills probing kicks giving good field position. The next points would again be in Albion’s favour, with John Hill scoring himself after breaking through and crashing over the line shortly before the half. Kicked by Dan Page the score lays at 5-10.

The away team came back hard, and moving the ball nicely in counter attack the hornets were probing the edges of the field finding space, making them difficult to defence, eventually leading to another try for the Weston outfit, unconverted making the scores 10-10

A good clearance from the restart allowed Albion to convert more pressure into points, giving good field position and good defence the united 2nd xv were now in the swing of it and on the right side of a penalty which was put into touch on the 22-meter line. The resulting lineout was taken strongly in the air by Simon Buck and driven hard by the rest of the pack only to be stopped a meter short, but the evergreen and returned scrumhalf Rodger Drabble saw space on the blindside which he darted into for what would be an easy score for the veteran 9. Half time 15-10 in United’s favour.

The 2nd half showed a resurgent visiting side, working hard on their shape and form defending non-stop they made Bridgwater work hard for every meter and showed real passion to seal the victory with 2 further tries, both made from Bridgwater errors, frustrating the home side incessantly who had looked like a victory was on the cards. Though the game was fast paced and played in good spirit with good dominance at the set piece the boys failed to capitalise on a win that was theirs for the taking.

The boys will be extremely disappointed with this loss, with a senior team out they showed vast improvements in every area of the game, but will need to find another gear again this week as they face Gordano away who are strong contenders for the league title
