With the Bridgwater & Albion RFC’s First XV’s away match against Chosen Hill Former Pupils being postponed because of a waterlogged pitch the focus of attention for local rugby followers was the Second’s home match against Weston-Super-Mare, which turned out to be another thriller.
In both halves Albion started off in the ascendancy, but Weston clawed themselves back into the game. Eventually claimed the spoils with a last-minute try.
The home side took the early initiative and forced an early goal line drop out. In the seventh minute the opened their account. James Brakes, making his first appearance for some time ran in to score a try.
Hellier converted try
On quarter of an hour Hellier broke through the middle and almost created. From the next move Albion worked the ball from the backs and Charlie Willcox went over for a try. Hellier converted to make it 12-0.
A fairly even spell of play followed as Weston countered well and spent time in the Albion half but the home defence held firm.
In the 32nd minute a quickly taken line out put the visitors onto the attack. The move finished off with their prop crashing over for a try. This try was converted.
Three minutes later the visitors took a quick penalty, and their scrum half raced in from some way out to score a try. That was also converted.
Just before the interval Weston extended their lead. Their winger scored in the corner making it 12-19 at the break.
Albion started off the second half strongly. After Willcox was stopped just short of the line several others all went close. and Jono Hayes burst through but was held.
However, in the 65th minute the hosts won the ball in midfield and swung it through the backs before Willcox went over for his second try of the game. This was unconverted.
Albion kicked a penalty into touch
Ten minutes later Albion kicked a penalty into touch and from the line put drive Karolin Urbonas went over to score to make it 22-19 and put the hosts back into the lead.
In the last-minute Albion tried to run the ball out of defence and lost it on the touchline. Weston capitalised and raced in eagerly to score the winning try.
The Albion Seconds are at home again this Saturday when they host Tor, kicking off at 2pm.
The First XV are without a game this coming weekend so their next match will be at home to table toppers Cleve on Saturday 8th March- a break of five weeks.
