Bridgwater and Albion 24- St Ives-20

| 02/04/2019

South West One (West)

Two late tries sealed a victory for the hosts in this keenly contested match between two evenly matched sides, both near the top of the table.

St Ives took the lead after three minutes of the match when Dan Magee kicked home a penalty awarded for offside. Magee doubled the St Ives score when he slotted home a second penalty 10 minutes later.

A free kick to touch after 17 minutes seemed to ignite the hosts and for the next period of the game it was Bridgwater who were in the ascendancy.

Player coach Wayne Sprangle made a great break from deep in his own territory and Bridgwater were then awarded a penalty for off side, which Stuart Heal hit the post with. However the loose ball was gathered and found its way to Ethan Trebble-Westlake who went over for a try on the left which Heal converted to give the home side the lead.

Right on half time Bridgwater were awarded another penalty which Heal kicked to make the score 10-6 at the break.

St Ives came out of the traps all guns blazing after the interval and almost from the re-start Joe Parma ran through to score a try by the posts which Magee converted to regain the lead for the visitors.

The Cornish side continued to create pressure but the home defence held out well until after quarter of an hour of the second half , when Magee found his way to the line in the left corner to score a try that he then converted to extend his team’s lead to 10 points.

They may have been trailing by 10 points but Bridgwater dug deep and after an incisive break by Will Monro the ball found it’s way to James Collings in space on the right, who ran in to score a try which Heal converted.

Bridgwater came straight back from the re-start and two minutes later Collings went over for his second try which Heal converted, to put the home back in the lead again.

St Ives weren’t done however and back they came on the attack, but their efforts were repelled by the home defence as the game ended 24-20.
