Bridgy coach happy with opening game.

| 07/09/2016

Simon MorrellBridgwater and Albion head coach Simon Morrell was more than happy with the way that his team performed in their first league match of the season on Saturday.

The coach said afterwards:  “Although we didn’t enjoy the best of circumstances leading up to Saturday’s game and were missing the likes of Rob Allen and Luke Plummer, overall I felt we made a good start to the  campaign.

“Lots of the of work we had done in pre-season focused on creating a solid foundation regarding the way that we play irrespective of who was in the starting line up.

“We wanted to defend exceptionally well and we wanted to be clinical at the set pieces and we knew that if we do that then we would be in a strong position to win regardless of who was in our line up.

He went on: “It wasn’t great to go into the first game with the number of injuries that we have but it did test a lot of the work that we have done in pre-season. They didn’t score a try while we managed to run in five against them and we were pretty exceptional at the set pieces as well which was perfect.

“It proved to the boys that the systems we have put in place combined with hard work will get us through in close games.

Overall how did the head coach feel things had gone since he returned to the club?

“We needed more game time before our opener but all things considered it was a good first showing from us but there is a significant amount of growth left in this squad yet.”

“Well done to the boys, they played well so that is a big plus point, but we need to stay grounded, get back in on Tuesday night, because we can make still more improvements on the way that we played.”

Simon talked about the squad he has got this season at Bridgy.

“We are fairly blessed with the squad that we have got at the club. There are five or six boys who could perform well above this standard, but then the rest are all of a similar standard and can compete well at this level. We have got some superstars but then we also have good depth around them as well. “
