KEITH CHARLES SMITH

MARCH 1931 – JUNE 2019

Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club is sad to announce the death of the former Bristol, Bridgwater & Albion and Somerset wing three-quarter Keith Smith on 11 June.

Keith played his rugby football principally for Bristol where he made 172 first team appearances between 1950 and 1959 scoring 68 tries.  He also represented Somerset County RFU on 24 occasions.  He was far from a typical wing from those early days being tall, burly and very powerful and his bursts up the wing and trade mark leap over the line when scoring were relished by the Bristol supporters.  He was an extremely difficult man to tackle and caused problems galore in opposition defences.  Towards the end of his career he switched to the back row and played his last matches for Bristol in 1958/59.

Keith was educated at Bristol Grammar School and then attended Bristol University where he is one of the University’s first intake of veterinary students.  On qualification as a vet, he found his way to the practice of Scott & Smith in Bridgwater where he was a partner for many years until retirement.  He retired to Bampton and carried on some light farming in his later years.  Whilst in Bridgwater he was briefly connected with Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club and he will be well-remembered in Bridgwater farming circles for his services as a vet.

This Club passes their sincere condolences to Keith’s family on their sad loss.  His funeral will be held at Taunton Crematorium on Thursday 27 June at 11 am.
