GEOFFREY G WILLIAMS
Sad loss of local rugby football and refereeing stalwart
Bridgwater & Albion sends its sincere condolences to the family of Geoff Williams who passed away last week aged 91. Geoff was a stalwart member of North Petherton Rugby Football Club as a player right through to President and life member. He will be known to many Bridgwater & Albion players from the late 1960’s onwards as a referee as he blew the whistle for Somerset Rugby Referees Society for many years. After retiring from the pursuit of the game, Geoff served his club in many capacities – more latterly he was the dressing room steward looking after the facilities immaculately and always ensured that all teams – home and visitors – received a welcome cup of tea after their games as well as ensuring a welcome supply of hot water in the baths and showers.
A few seasons ago Geoff was nominated as Somerset’s Value the Volunteer which won him a trip to Twickenham to watch an England game with all of the hospitality trimmings and which he thoroughly enjoyed – an apt tribute to such magnificent service to his club and to rugby football in general.
