LOCAL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBS MOURN LOSS OF TALENTED CENTRE STEVE PAUL

| 10/08/2023

Burnham-on-Sea Rugby Football Club are mourning the loss of their former captain and stalwart Stephen Paul at the age of 74.  Bridgwater & Albion RFC also join in the condolences as Steve joined Bridgwater from Burnham in the late 1960’s and stayed for four or five seasons before returning to Burnham.

Steve was an astute centre who came up through Burnham-on-Sea Colts and also played for Somerset at that level.  He graduated in to the Burnham 1st XV at a young age and in the late 1960’s joined Albion to progress his career.  He did this successfully, enjoying his midfield role with a combination of good defence and attacking ability.  In the Albion back line he was a contemporary of the likes of Mike Berry, Neil Crombie, Brian Scott, Clive Webber, David Ayers, Roy Gummer, Bob Payne and numerous other notables.  He appeared around 60 times in Albion’s 1st XV.

On returning to Burnham, he was the mainstay of their side for many seasons before retirement.  After that, he threw himself in to the overall administration and good running of the Burnham club doing all jobs required and assisting in the development of the ground and clubhouse.

Steve was a fine ambassador for the game of rugby football and for the clubs for whom he played and he will be sadly missed.  Bridgwater & Albion sends its sincere condolences to the Burnham club and to Steve’s family.
