Nailsea and Backwell 41- 27 Bridgwater & Albion RFC
Bridgwater & Albion RFC made their table topping hosts fight all the way before Nailsea and Backwell eventually ran out the winners in this their penultimate league match of the season.
Albion started well, making good use of the slope and the breeze and following an early exchange of kicks a Nailsea clearance was charged down by full back Josh Frost who ran in 35 metres to score an unconverted try after four minutes.
In the 10th minute a kick deep into home territory caused problems, Albion got the ball and drove to the line. Harvey Fisher crashed over to score. On the quarter of an hour mark the hosts hit back with a converted try making the score 7-10.
Albion then worked their way downhill. Following good thrusts by Karolis Urbonas, Rowan Traynor and Alex Knight, Urbonas went over for a try. Kyran Devitt converted.
After 21 minutes Nailsea were awarded a penalty. They kicked into touch and from the following catch and drive scored a try that was converted.
The hosts attacked strongly for 10 minutes but the Albion defence held. A good break out from the five metre scrum by Devitt was carried on by Mahoney and Knight, but the ball was lost. Nailsea recovered the ball and worked it across their backs before scoring a converted try. This was just on half time making the score 19-17.
The turning point of the match came immediately after the break when during the first seven minutes Nailsea and Backwell were rampant. They scored three tries, one of which were converted which made the score 36-17.
Albion kept spirits high
Despite being in arrears the visitors kept their sprits up. In the 51st minute after working the ball uphill Shaun Mahoney burst over.
On the hour mark Nailsea again made the most of the elements and moved the ball to score another try. This made the score 41-22.
In the final quarter of the game Albion were very much in charge and produced several attacks up the hill. But, on each occasion the home defence held.
However it was the visitors who had the final score. Good work by Jono Hayes turned defence into attack with a break uphill before the forwards rushed and Fisher went over for his second try. The game ended 41-27 to the champions elect.
