Somerset Cup..Derby Day again!

| 26/11/2019

This coming Saturday sees Bridgwater & Albion and North Petherton facing each other again, only this time it is in the Somerset Senior Cup and the match will be played at College Way, kicking off at 3pm.

Looking ahead to the match the Albion’s director of rugby Geoff Sluman said: “Last Fridays league game will most certainly not be a distant memory and I am sure both sides will work on what they have learned.

“This week’s fixture is in the Senior Somerset Cup which is a competition with a lot of history – actually longer than league rugby. The Somerset Senior Cup was first played in the 1970/71 season when it was won by none other than Bath Rugby.”

Geoff went on: “We respect the cup competition and have been regular participants, players enjoy a good cup run and we would like to enjoy that this season.

“However we do have to be mindful though to make the best use of our full squad and not over play some players. Friday’s fixture was a physical encounter and there are a few players with battered and bruised bodies.

“Unfortunately our Second XV fixture away to Keynsham was cancelled due to unplayable pitch at the weekend and they do not have a scheduled fixture this coming weekend either.

“Therefore, the way it has turned out, if we do not play some squad players next week, we could have some players who do not play for three weeks and others who have played every week. We have to consider this and also use the cup competition for our up and coming players to gain valuable experience of playing in pressure games without risking league results.

“We have not considered our selection of a team yet and will not do so until after training on Tuesday evening to see how everybody is feeling.”

Geoff added: “The game kicks off at 3pm and every game between Bridgy and Pethy is competitive so please come along and support if you can.”
