Bridgwater & Albion RFC 29-29 Dings Crusaders Seconds

Bridgwater & Albion RFC brought the curtain down on their season with a rousing performance against high flying Dings Crusaders Second XV that earned them a well deserved 29-29 draw, from which they take three points.

Second in the table Dings got off to a flyer.  Within a minute, the team had taken the lead with a converted try.

The home side responded strongly.  After threatening the Dings line on several occasions, in the eighth minute, they were rewarded when Kyran Devitt went over for a try.  Jay Owens converted to level the scores.

Albion continued to take the game to Dings.  On several occasions, they got close to the try line only to be repelled by a strong defence.

James Collins Corner

On 20 minutes, a strong run down the right flank by Danny Mahoney resulted in James Collings going over in the corner.  Unfortunately, the try was disallowed because Mahoney was adjudged to have stepped into touch.

The hosts continued to pressure the visitors’ line.  On the half-hour mark, Dings won the ball in their own half and worked it back to the opposite end.  They scored an unconverted try.

Nearing half time, Lewis Plece made a strong break down the right but was bundled into touch close to the corner.  Dings cleared from the line out.

In the 37th minute, Albion took the lead for the first time.  Following a 22 metre scrum they rumbled forward with the ball before acting captain Alex Knight crashed over for a try.  Owens added the extras to, making it 14-12 at the interval.

Visitors came out strongly after half-time at Bridgwater & Albion RFC

Dings came out strongly after half-time, but the hosts defended well and won back possession.  This was before the ball was worked across the backs to create space and a scoring opportunity on the left, but the final pass was adjudged to have gone forward.

Bridgwater were in the ascendancy at this stage in the game.  They extended their lead 15 minutes into the second half when Devitt scored his second try of the match.  This one was left of the posts.  Owens duly converted to make the score 21-12.

Dings however remained a constant threat.  Following a break down the left and lineout they scored an unconverted try. The Bristol side maintained the pressure on the try line, but the Albion players gave it their all, defended strongly and prevented any score.

In the 65th minute Albion were awarded a penalty that was kicked cross field  to touch and from the line out the ball was worked across the field where it found Jacob Nelson on the left who squeezed over for a try that was unconverted, which made the score 26-17.

With 10 minutes remaining Albion were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Owens slotted home.

The Final stages

In the final stages, the visitors pressed hard and scored a try that was surprisingly unconverted.  Then just before the end, Dings had the final say with another converted score to make it 29-29.

This was one of Albion’s best displays of the season.  Had they produced this sort of performance more regularly, they wouldn’t be at the wrong end of the table. Whether or not they retain their Western Counties status has yet to be decided.
