Taunton Warriors 33-40 Bridgwater & Albion RFC

This game had everything you could possibly want from a local derby.  It was highly competitive throughout and in the end was decided by a try in the dying minutes.

The opening exchanges were even but after 10 minutes Bridgwater pressure saw them take the lead.  Kyran Devitt slotted home a penalty from in front of the posts.

Taunton responded strongly and looked to attack at every opportunity.  They moved the the ball well across their backs, but the visitor’s defence held firm and they were able to clear their line.

Strong Bridgwater attack

A strong Bridgwater attack down the left flank deep into Taunton territory was fought back but the ball was quickly moved out to the right wing.  Connor Hull was on hand to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.

The visitors kept up the pressure and on 25 minutes following a line out they extended their lead when Alex Knight went over in the left hand corner making it 0-13.

Taunton came straight back onto the attack and shortly after opened their account when Ossie Jones made a good break before Brodie Sheach went over for a try that Ollie Guest added the extras to.

The game was very even with each side having their fair share of the ball.

The half-hour mark

On the half-hour mark, a strong Bridgwater attack saw scrum-half Jon Hill go over in the right-hand corner to make the score 7-18.

The last period of the first half saw the Warriors in the ascendancy.  On 37 minutes a strong run from prop John Davidson put Sheach in for his second try.  This was converted by Guest.

Just before the interval, Taunton took the lead for the first time when Davidson went over for a try.  Guest converted to make it 21-18 at halftime.

Bridgwater came out strongly after the break and after five minutes a Devitt penalty levelled the scores.

Taunton player sent to the sin bin

After 51 minutes Taunton had a player sent to the sin bin and during his absence the visitors regained the lead with a try from Gavin Knight.

The home side grabbed back the lead five minutes later when Ben Heath picked up a loose ball and ran from deep in his own half to score a try to the left of the posts which Guest converted to make the score 28-26.

Shortly afterwards Bridgwater were reduced to 14 when a player was sent to the sin bin.

Five minutes later Taunton found themselves down to 14 when they had a player yellow carded but this didn’t prevent them going further ahead when Ossie James stole the ball and ran from his own half to score in the left hand corner.

With 10 minutes remaining the game was really hotting up. A period of Bridgwater pressure led to a scrum in front of the posts.  The ball was fed to Charlie Willcox who crashed over for a try which Devitt converted to level the scores.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC kept the pressure

Bridgwater kept up the pressure and driven on by skipper Taylor Buller.  They scored the deciding try when Harry Pentelow crossed the line. Devitt duly converted to make the final score 33-40.

The game was played in front of a large crowd which included many travelling supporters.

Bridgwater & Albion are without a game this coming weekend but return to league action with a home match against Gordon League on Saturday 15th February.
