Bridgwater & Albion RFC 6-21 Clifton Wanderers RFC

Bridgwater and Albion RFC produced a strong performance when they hosted high-flying Clifton.  Although they lost the match, had they taken their chances, the result may well have been different.

The visitors who in their previous match had beaten Taunton, started strongly.  From the start Sam Pine went over between the posts for a converted try.

Bridgwater returned well and created a couple of good attacking moves which sadly came to nothing. Clifton continued to look to attack but the home defence held firm and the score remained 0-7.

Flowing moves from Clifton

However, on 20 minutes a flowing move from Clifton led to an opening in the middle of the line.  Jack Bowyer took advantage of to run in and touch down between the posts for a converted try.

The hosts responded well.  A strong run by the ever-dangerous Kyran Devitt took the ball deep into Clifton territory but again didn’t lead to any score.

Bridgwater then enjoyed a good passage of play during which a rolling maul near the right touchline gained 30 metres, but again went unrewarded.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC maintained pressure

The home side maintained the pressure and just before halftime, they were awarded a long-range penalty inside the Clifton half.  Devitt slotted home making the score 3-14 at the interval.

Bridgwater continued in the ascendancy and soon after the break, Devitt kicked another penalty to reduce the arrears.

Clifton, however, were far from done.  After 10 further minutes after the re-start following a scrum on the 30-metre line Jason Grinstead gathered the ball and ran in between the posts to score a try that was converted.

Despite trailing 6-21 the hosts kept coming forward and produced several good moves that got them close to the try line but on each occasion, they were repelled.

In the dying minutes, Jay Owens collected the ball halfway out and ran towards the left corner before being tackled. The game ended with Bridgwater trying to do what they had been attempting all afternoon- score a try but sadly it wasn’t to be as it ended 6-21.

On Friday evening Bridgwater & Albion host Chew Valley RFC in the Webb Ellis Somerset Cup kicking off at 7.30pm.
