Bridgwater and Albion RFC 10 – Wellington RFC 13.

Bridgwater and Albion RFC suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of newly promoted Wellington in this evenly contested match played at a fast pace in front of a large crowd.

The home side had plenty of chances but were unable to turn these opportunities into points, thwarted either by the solid Wellington defence or by choosing the wrong options.

After Wellington had the better of the opening exchanges, Albion had the first scoring chance in the left hand corner but the visitors defence held firm and they were unable to cross the line.

Bridgwater kept up the pressure and on 19 minutes they broke the deadlock when Stuart Heal slotted home a close range penalty.

Score remained the same….

The score remained the same until just before the break when Wellington had Liam Phillips yellow carded very soon after which Shaun Mahoney crashed over to score a try which was converted by Heal making the score 10-0 to Albion at the interval.

Wellington began strongly after the interval and on 10 minutes they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts for off side which Rob Hooper kicked.

Shortly after Wellington drew level when following a good break through the middle by John Govier, Vinny Gordon sliced his way through the defence with a jinking run to score a try which Hooper converted to level the scores.

Bridgwater and Albion RFC responded strongly

Bridgwater responded strongly and created several good scoring chances, but try as they may were repelled by Wellington or chose the wrong option.

With 15 minutes remaining Wellington were awarded another penalty for offside which Hooper kicked to make it 10-13 at the final whistle.

Afterwards the Bridgwater and Albion Director of Rugby Geoff Sluman said: “It was very much a day of mixed emotions. It was great to get back to rugby but it as a disappointing result for us.

“The players worked hard throughout the game and at times we played some decent rugby but I have to admit we were our own worst enemy. That is not to take anything away from Wellington – they deserved their win.

“However at times our decision making was questionable and as a result we failed to take points when we perhaps should have and that put more pressure on us. That said there were far more positives and we have plenty to work with. It was a very competitive game with two evenly matched sides that made for entertaining rugby.”

Sluman added:”Next Saturday we have another home game against Chew Valley who enjoyed a thumping win on the opening game against Thornbury running out 41-19 winners so we are right back to it.The players are already looking forward to next weekend.”
