Bridgwater and Albion RFC 18 – North Petherton RFC – 40 – Match Report

| 07/10/2022

Bridgwater and Albion remain RFC at the bottom of the table without a point to their name.  This is after they were beaten at home by local rivals North Petherton. Despite the scoreline the hosts competed strongly throughout and were always in the game.  Even in the final quarter when the visitors were in the ascendancy.

North Petherton kicked off with the wind behind their backs.  Within two minutes took the lead when Jack Rees kicked a penalty, awarded for offside. Five minutes later Rees slotted home another for Petherton to put them into a 6-0 lead.

Tom Steer makes debut for Bridgwater and Albion RFC

Tom Steer formerly of Exmouth making his debut at scrum half for Bridgwater and Albion was soon in the midst of the action.  He opened the hosts account when he kicked a penalty in front of the posts after eight minutes

Bridgwater enjoyed a good period but there was no further score until  the 27th minute when Steer kicked a long cross field clearance deep into North Petherton territory towards the left hand corner which appeared to be going out but was touched back into play by a Petherton player and seized upon by the pursuing Tom Croal who went over for an unconverted try.

With half time approaching North Petherton mounted several attacks down the right wing.  Each of which was repelled until just before the break.  Rees kicked a difficult long-range penalty to make the score 9-8 to the visitors at the interval.

Bridgwater and Albion RFC gained momentum

Bridgwater enjoyed their best period in the game at the start of the second half and regained the lead.  Steer kicked a penalty in front of the posts, making the score 11-9.

The home side kept up their pressure and Steer was very much to the fore.  He ran through for a try which he then converted to extend the Bridgwater lead to 18-9.

North Petherton responded strongly and after a period of pressure down the right wing on the hour they were awarded a penalty try for an early tackle/obstruction, which made the score 18-16, as a result of which Croal was yellow carded.

North Petherton took hold of the game

The visitors then took hold of the game and in the space of three minutes scored two converted tries, the first by Sam Williams and the second from Damian Griffen, both of which were converted by Rees making the score 18-30.

With the clock ticking down Petherton were awarded a penalty which Rees kicked and then just before the final whistle Adam Conybeare ran through on the left for the final try of the game that was converted by Mitch Needham, making the final score 18-40.

Bridgwater are without a game next Saturday and are next in action when they host Sherborne on Friday 14th October kick off 7.30pm.
