| 06/02/2023

Crediton RFC 55 – Bridgwater & Albion RFC 19.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC slipped closer towards relegation into the Western Counties league when they were beaten by a strong and forceful Crediton team who started the day in second place.

Despite their defeat once again Bridgwater played well in parts and scored three tries, but they lacked consistency and on a number of  occasions after working hard to gain the advantage, they surrendered it.

Crediton kicked off and from the start created pressure on the visitors line. The Bridgwater defence held up well.  After 10 minutes Josh Goldman went over for a try in the right hand corner.  Josh Davey converted.

Homeside continued to dominate

The home side continued to dominate proceedings and it wasn’t until 25 minutes had passed that Bridgwater had their first incursion into home territory.  This sadly went unrewarded. The mid Devon side came straight back and were awarded a penalty for offside near the half way line.  Davey slotted home.

Three minutes later Bridgwater put together a series of good moves.  This resulted in them winning a scrum deep into the Crediton half but this came to nothing.

Almost before the Bridgwater players had time to regroup Crediton broke from the back and the ball was passed to Josh Lee on the left.  Josh ran in from 25 metres to score a try which Davey converted.

Half time Blues

As the clock ticked down to half time Crediton scored two more converted tries, the first by Jake Clarke on the left after 43 minutes and three minutes later the second from Freddie Borthen.  Both of which Davey converted making the score 31-0 at the break.

Crediton continued in the ascendancy and two minutes after the restart Borthen scored his second try.

Five minutes into the second half Bridgwater winger Will Monro found himself in space for the first time in the game and set off an a blistering run down the right wing a move which resulted in James Collings going over to score a try which Steer converted.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC powered on!

Bridgwater enjoyed their best spell of the game  and spent much of the next 10 minutes close to the Crediton  line, but were unable to add to their score. The home side soaked up the pressure and defended well throughout the game.  On the hour the ball was worked to Josh Goldman who scored a try.  Davey converted to make the score 43-7.

The visitors weren’t done yet however and back they came into the home heartland in search of another try.

It wasn’t to be however and the ball somehow found itself at the feet of Crediton’s Dan Lee.  Dan hacked it forward from deep in his own half before a kindly bounce enabled him to collect and touch it down for a try.  This was converted, taking the score to 50-7.

Going into the final stages of the match Crediton scored another try as a result of which Bridgwater were reduced to 14 players.  Collings firstly shown a yellow card and then a red for appearing to appeal the referee’s decision.

Despite being a man down the visitors spent the final stages of the match camped in Crediton’s half. The hosts themselves then had a player yellow carded for not releasing.

Bridgwater line out

Bridgwater had a line out on the right from which they drove towards the line before Jordan Buller crashed over. Shortly afterwards Jordan Buller went over for another try which Steer converted making the final score 55-12 to Crediton.

This coming Saturday sees Bridgwater away at Sidmouth.  A team who they beat 16-15 on November 4th 2022 at College Way.
