Geoff says…
With two wins out of two games Bridgwater and Albion director of rugby Geoff Sluman is naturally happy with the start that his side has made in the league.
Reflecting on the victory over Hornets on their 4G pitch Geoff said: “Well first off, we are of course, really pleased with the result. Two wins from two at the start of the season is a good start and both of those wins have been away from home. We won’t read too much into anything,and I know Hornets consider themselves unlucky with that result. We consider it a good result for us and to deny them a losing bonus point could prove important at the end of the season.
“Every team scraps for the difference in bonus points at the end of the season yet they are just as important at the start of the season.
“During last week’s match we made a slow start but this week we started much better and applied a lot pressure early on. We were somewhat unlucky to concede points first and that was definitely against the run of play. It took character to absorb the early set back and the team worked hard to get back on the scoreboard. The same resilience was required several times during the match.
“The team adapted brilliantly to the 4G pitch and I am very proud of the performance the squad delivered.”
Its not just the results that Geoff is happy with, but the attitude of the Albion players is pleasing him as well.
“All of the players at the club are willingly buying into the culture change the coaches are introducing and many things are standing out as improving. Two in particular from the game against Hornets were how hard the players were willing to work for each other and for the team, the second was the standards the players are setting for themselves – they know they can and they all want to improve from where we are.”
This coming weekend Albion play their first home game this season when Cullompton visit College Way, kick off 3pm.
“We are looking forward to our first home match against Cullompton. We will have to get the balance right between putting pressure on ourselves to improve whilst not putting on unnecessary pressure. We respect Cullompton, we know they are a capable side, and they will see it as an opportunity to boost their start to the season if they turn us over.
Geoff added: “The coaches have already mapped out what we want the squad to achieve in training this week. As last week we will approach the match with confidence but know we will have to be at our best to get the result we want.”
