MARTIN “CHUBBY” SINGLETON

1947 – 2016

Playing members of the Club from the late 1960s/early to mid 1970s will have been saddened by the news of the sudden death of Martin “Chubby” Singleton at the age of 68.  Chubby as he was universally known was a fine No 8 who also played in the second row when the occasion demanded.  He could handle all of that due to his large 6’4 frame.  He was one of a wave of Burnham-on-Sea players who made their way to Albion through the 60s and 70s intent on improving their Rugby Football.  Chubby certainly did that appearing with some aplomb mainly at No 8 for us and he made around 50 1st XV appearances.  He was naturally solid due to his size but carried the ball well and was a difficult man to stop.  He also gave excellent protection to his scrum halves.  After his spell with Albion Chubby returned to Burnham but then plied his skills at Weston-super-Mare and also briefly with Bristol for whom he appeared in their United XV.  His career was brought to an end by continuing injury but all of the Clubs for whom he appeared will look back and thank him for a job well done.

He was literally a larger than life character and always had a good word for everyone he came across and cheered up proceedings no end.  He was a man of Highbridge in both residence and working terms and never left the area.  In his retirement he was often seen following the game at Burnham and occasionally at Albion.

He bade farewell to a full house congregation at St Andrews Church on Friday 4 March where a considerable attendance of former colleagues from all Clubs paid their last tributes.
