Somerset Cup – Sunday 01 December 2013

Bridgwater Colts proceed to the second round of the Colts Somerset Cup courtesy of a convincing away win at Midsommer Norton on Sunday.  From the kick off Bridgy showed their intent with several penetrating backs runs culminating with a wide unconverted try from winger Luke Sinclair. From the re-start 2nd row Sena Saunders picked up loose ball on a ruck fringe crashed through two tackles and made a 45 metere solo run to the line for the first of his three tries.  Again the extras were missed.

The backs were under orders to move the ball which they did just three minutes later and outside centre Dave Hughes added a further 5 points to the visitors score.  Bridgwater then allowed Norton a soft try when lazy running in defence caught them napping with their full back committed Norton scored an unconverted try in the corner.  On 36 mins. Full Back Callum Gillard took a cheeky tap penalty on halfway and outpaced the defence to make the score 5 – 20.  2nd Row older brother Liam who had been having an immense game had to be replaced due to a dead leg.  Norton then added to their score after considerable pressure on the visitors defence and the half ended at 10 -20.

The second period started much as the first with concerted Bridgwater pressure and tackle offloads allowing the forward momentum to be maintained.  Saunders took the ball from about 10 metres and crashed over for his second, this time converted try.  Between that and Saunders third try, Centre John Badger made an excellent dinking run which saw him add a further try and , from the re-start Saunders took the ball in and ran fully 70 meteres through the heart of Norton’s defence for a magnificent converted solo effort.

Bridgwater had been warned they were conceding to many penalties and when replacement 2nd Row Lewis Croker was accidentally offside in the loose he received the first of three rapid yellow cards with just 13 minutes to play.  Bridgwater came under huge pressure for the next few minutes but held up a driving maul, several solo attempts on their line and a couple of line outs.  David Hughes prevented a certain try with arguably the best tackle of the game as he drove the Norton ball carrier into touch with real aggression.

A Bridgwater scrum saw scrum Half Niall Homer break down the blindside and offload to Flyhalf Lewis Plece who almost broke through the Norton defence for a free run to their line. However Norton turned the ball over and kicking for field position applied more pressure.  At this time the second of the yellow cards was produced for a supposed deliberate high tackle from 2nd rower Asher Bentham followed by Prop Carl Guest for hands in a ruck.  Just before full time with Bridgy down to 13 men Norton managed a further well converted try in the corner.

This was Bridgewater’s 6th win in a row and they next play Wellington Colts in the League at Bath Road on Saturday 7th December.  Wellington are a strong side so the game promises to be one not to be missed.
