| 31/10/2022

Bridgwater and Albion RFC travelled to high flying St Austell.  Bridgater and Albion RFC put in a game performance and tackled their hearts out until the end.  They were well beaten by their hosts.

The visitors started the game playing up the slope with the wind slanting across them.  Early on took the ball into the St Austell 22, but the move was cleared.

Former Bridgwater rugby player Ashwin scores try

In the 12th minute however, St Austell took the lead when Ashwin scored a try which Shepherd converted.

The Cornish side extended their lead five minutes later.  A simple passing move resulted in winger Bullen scoring an unconverted try.

Tom Steer returned to the Bridgwater side after missing the home game with Teignmouth.  Steer gained a lot of territory, with a deep penetrating kick.  Unfortunately, the home defence cleared the danger.

Attacking moves from St Austell

St Austell then mounted a series of attacking moves, which the visitors defence managed to repel. However, on the half hour they conceded a penalty close to the line.  This saw a melee of players bundle over the line and another try for the hosts which Shepherd converted.

The hosts kept coming forward and their long passing game across the field was rewarded.  Ewudzi went over for a try.

Despite being 24-0 in arrears Bridgwater kept fighting hard.  Roger Drabble made a good break before passing to Dan Page who had come on as a replacement for Danny Mahoney.  Once again, the home defence dealt with the danger.

Further tries against Bridgwater and Albion RFC

St Austell added two further tries before the half time break the first coming from Ewudzi and the second from Bullen both of which were converted by Shepherd making the score 38-0 at the interval.

The Cornish side were in full flow for the first 30 minutes of the second half and despite the Bridgwater team putting in their tackles and continuing to compete strongly, they scored further tries to take their lead to 76-0.

Bridgwater get into the game

Bridgwater then started to get themselves into the game and over the last 10 minutes they played themselves deep into St Austell territory on several occasions but were unable to make their advantage count.

At the other end Shepherd scored a try to which he then added the extras. Bridgwater came back strongly and had their best chance when Will Kerry crashed over the line, but the try was denied shortly after which the referee blew the final whistle.
