Teignmouth RFC 37 – Bridgwater & Albion RFC 17

Bridgwater & Albion RFC travelled to Teignmouth on Saturday where they found very different conditions to those they left behind- the ground was frost free and for much of the match the sun was shining.

Sadly though for the visitors who were sporting their new away shirts, despite giving a spirited and much improved performance they came away empty handed.

The hosts kicked off to the left side where the ball was fielded and passed across the backs to Faolan Lidstone.  He then went over for this first try of the afternoon.

The home side extended the lead

Five minutes later Jack Mayne extended the lead when he slotted home a penalty.

Bridgwater responded strongly and a good move saw them deep into Teignmouth territory which was repelled by the home defence. Shortly after however they were awarded a long range penalty just inside their opponents half which Tom Steer kicked.

The visitors took the lead after 21 minutes when following a series of good moves Taylor Buller went over between the posts.  Steer added the extras.

Almost from the restart however the hosts were back in front.  Lidstone went over for his second try which Jack Mayne converted.

Bridgwater & Albion on the attack

Bridgwater went straight back onto the attack and worked their way towards the Teignmouth line. Unfortunately for the Bridgwater side the home defence held firm.

The hosts extended their lead when following a long clearance and a series of fortunate bounces Jack Bullen went over for an unconverted try.  This made the score 20-10.

Bridgwater finished the first half strongly.  Their best efforts came to nothing and there was no further score before the interval.

Ten minutes after the break Teignmouth extended their lead.  Following a penalty to touch and a line out Dan Woolnough scored a try which Mayne converted.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC shows persistence away from home

The visitors then enjoyed their best period of the match and a series of moves down the left created pressure.  This was eventually rewarded when replacement Rory Hobbs crashed over between the posts for his first senior try.  Steer converted.

Bridgwater were far from done and continued to attack but were unable to convert their pressure into points.

In the final few minutes Teignmouth seized back the initiative when Mayne kicked a penalty and shortly after the hosts scored a converted try making the final score 37-17.

On Saturday the Albion host top of the table St Austell before which the Dirtracker XV are holding a gathering of former players.
