Truro RFC 43 – Bridgwater & Albion RFC 24 – Match Report

Bridgwater & Albion RFC made their longest trip west to face third placed Truro on Saturday, where after conceding three early tries they fought back strongly and much to the credit of everyone involved came away with a bonus point.

The match was overshadowed by the sad loss of Bridgwater’s Beth Branson earlier in the week.  As a mark of respect, the players wore black arm bands and both teams observed two minutes silence before kickoff.

In addition, the Bridgwater & Albion RFC number 3 shirt, Beth’s playing number, was retired in her memory.

Cornish side out of the starting block quickly

From the kickoff the Cornish side were quickly into their stride.  Within the first quarter of an hour’s play had scored three tries, two of which were converted.

Bridgwater had enjoyed very little possession during the opening period.  Soon after finding themselves 19-0 down, they were awarded a penalty which was kicked into touch. From the line out the visitors drove over for an unconverted try by George Sluman.  This got them onto the scoreboard.

The visitors kept up their pressure and following a powerful break by Chris Tong.  Tong went over for a try in the corner which Taylor Buller converted from the touch line.  This made the score 19-12 and brought Bridgwater right back into the game.

Unconverted try for Truro

Almost from the re-start Bridgwater were turned over in their own 22 which resulted in an unconverted try for the home side.

Bridgwater however came back strongly and reduced the arrears with an unconverted try from vice captain Taylor Buller. Before the interval Truro scored another converted try which made the half time score 31-17.

After the break the hosts were awarded a penalty which resulted in a powerful drive forward and a try which was converted.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC kept fighting back

Bridgwater kept on coming back.  A great charge down from a Truro kick led to a try from Jack Perry which Taylor Buller converted. In the remaining minutes Truro scored another unconverted try which made the final score 43-24.

Afterwards Geoff Sluman the director of rugby said

“Of course we are somewhat disappointed with the result but we have taken a four try bonus point from a top 3 side.

“The patterns of our play are definitely getting strong so what Carl Rimmer and the coaches are working on in training is starting to flow through to match day performances against top sides. We will use the upcoming rest week and look forward to playing Wadebridge at home on 26th November.”

Geoff went on: “I am thrilled that the second team had a great win this weekend over Wells and their players are creating competition for first team places.

Finally, he added: “For everyone at the club our thoughts are not really about rugby this weekend but observing the sad loss of our Women’s team player Beth Branson. I make no apology for referencing her name again as she was a true club member. Our deepest condolences go to Beth’s family and friends.”
