Bridgwater & Albion RFC 25-17 Chard RFC

In this crucial match, played under lights on Friday evening, between the two sides near the bottom of the table, Albion exacted revenge for the 1 point defeat that they suffered when the two sides met at Chard.  They chalked up their second win if the season.

It all started rather ominously when in the fifth minute Chard rumbled a try.  Prop Tribble touched down.  It was reminiscent of the one that they scored to win the game in September.

Albion came back well and had a penalty to kick to touch.  In the 14th minute, they were awarded another penalty that Kyran Devitt kicked to make the score 5-3.

Chard RFC in Albion territory

From the kick off Chard won the ball back and set off into Albion territory.  Winger Bond, raced over for an unconverted try. Bond then produced another great run down the right but fortunately, this time he was held up.

Devitt made a fine burst to put his side in a good position, but he was injured in the process and left the field shortly afterwards.

Just before the break Albion were awarded a 35 metre penalty which Jay Owens slotted home  to make the half time score 6-10 to Chard.

After the break the home side came out looking like they meant business.  Second rower Tom West, produced two crucial bursts into the Chard defence.  When the ball came back Josh Frost went over for a try in the corner in the 46th minute.  This put Albion into the lead for the first time.

Tom West is dominant in the lineout

This was followed by 20 minutes of mid field play.  In the 70th minute West was again dominant in the line out.  Albion forwards rumbled on and Tom Hopkins wrestled his way over for a try.  Owens converted to put the home side into an 18-10 lead.

Chard rallied well with a long run upfield which was halted but in the 75th minute the visitors managed to scramble a try through Twose which Thomas converted to bring them to within one point of the hosts.

Two minutes later West who was having an outstanding match, imposed himself in the line-out, Traynor took the ball on and then Alec Knight seemed to have scored, but the referee had awarded a penalty try. The Albion then closed out the remaining few minutes as the game ended 25-17.

Bridgwater & Albion RFC players and supporters jubilant after long-awaited win

This was a much better all round performance which the home side needed to win which is what they did much to the delight of the players and their jubilant supporters who cheered their heroes off the field afterwards.

On Saturday, Albion travel to face Old Reds Second XV in their final match before the break.  They are due to resume in 2025 with a home match against Burnham on Sea on 4th January.
